6 things to know about laser tattoo removal

Answering the most common questions about laser tattoo removal

Getting a tattoo is always an important decision. It takes quite some thinking. What design to pick, how big should it be, what colors? But also, whether you will still be happy in a few years. That too must be factored in getting inked. Sure, it will impact the design you go for. But even though, you may still get bored of it and decide you no longer want this tattoo in your arm. However, how are you meant to remove a tattoo? Is laser tattoo removal a thing in the end?

It is and it is the solution anyone with an unwanted tattoo has been looking for. You can remove a tattoo you are no longer fond of or regret having. However, as much as getting inked in the first place was a big decision, removing a tattoo using a laser is no walk in the park. It is another equally important decision and a process that can take up to a year.

Must-know about laser tattoo removal

Laser tattoo removal is a service that we offer at Infinity Laser Spa and that will always be a consultation prior to starting the treatment. Indeed, just like each individual, each tattoo is unique and the process will never be the same. A laser technician will thus need to see your first, discuss your tattoo as well as answer any questions you may have. We will try to answer a few questions abouts laser tattoo removal here.

What machine do you use at Infinity Laser Spa?

At Infinity Laser Spa, we use a Q-Switch by Vertex Lasers machine. It offers the most effective and safest way to remove a tattoo with minimal recovery. The Q-Switch is a ND:YAG laser machine, a state-of-the-art technology specifically designed to work on all skin colors without damaging the skin tissue around the treat area. The laser will break the ink particles in the tattoo and the immune system will flush them away, thus contributing to fading the tattoo.

How does laser tattoo removal work?

We wrote an extensive blog post about how laser tattoo removal works. However, we will sum up the process here with you. The Q-Switch laser machine emits ultra-short pulses that are very fast. It is the heat and speed that are crucial to breakin up the ink particles. To break up an ink particle, you need to heat it so that it expands due to thermal expansion.

However, the zap has to be quick enough so that half of the particle remains cool. The opposing cool and hot forces then rip the ink particle apart. This process, called photothermolysis, is also used in laser hair removal. Once the ink is broken, white cells will target the ink particles and consume them. Your body will then take over, digesting the particles until your body completely gets rid of them.

Who can undergo laser tattoo removal?

Although the process is much faster on patients with fair skin and dark ink tattoos, laser tattoo removal can be done by anyone wishing to remove an unwanted tattoo. The ND:YAG laser does not rely too much on melanin to penetrate the skin and thus is safe to dark skins. It is also able to pick up lighter ink particles. Even though people of color can undergo the procedure, the treatment will take longer since the contract skin to ink remains more difficult to grab for the laser.

How long does the treatment take?

The length of the procedure will vary from one person to another as well as the type of tattoo. Older tattoos naturally start to fade in. The ink particles are thus much easier to remove. Bigger tattoos will require more time since the surface to work on is much larger. Lighter ink may also impact how many sessions you need. On average, the whole process takes from six up to eight sessions, every six weeks.

How to find a good laser tattoo removal specialist?

Finding the best laser tattoo removal specialist takes a lot of time, research and dedication. If you have friends who had a tattoo removed, you could ask them. Otherwise, we advise that you search online for salons close to you and read the reviews. They usually are a good indicator whether to trust the place. Here at Infinity Laser Spa, we are happy to schedule a FREE consultation, so you can make sure that you and your professional are on the same page.
