How do laser hair removal treatments work?

Laser hair removal is a hair growth reduction method that will reduce hair growth by up to 95%. As per the FDA, it is not yet considered a permanent hair removal method. However, a lot of patients do indeed experience permanent hair removal.

Facial laser hair removal treatment uses a principle called selective photothermolysis. The laser gun will make a wavelength and pulse duration match to target a specific object without damaging surrounding skin tissue. When it comes to laser hair removal, the target is the pigment in the hair.

During a laser hair removal session, the light energy emitted by the laser will target the pigments present in the hair. Once the energy is absorbed by the melanin, it will travel all the way down to the hair follicle. There it will turn into thermal energy and anchor itself to the follicle, thus damaging it. Once the follicle is damaged, it is unable to produce new hair.

Facial laser hair removal works only when the hair is in the anagen phase of growth. It is the only time the hair and the follicle connect; and the only time the energy can travel from the former to the latter. Unfortunately, only 20% of body hair is in this particular phase of growth at any point in time. Therefore, each session will only be able to target up to 20% of hair.

That is why a laser hair removal treatment always includes at least six sessions. So that the laser is able to target every single hair on the treated area when it is in the right stage of growth. Laser hair removal works on all skin tones and hair color. It does not affect the menstrual cycle either.

Can I do Laser hair Removal treatment on my face?

Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that works on all areas of the body. Patients can undergo facial laser hair removal. However, at Infinity Laser Spa, we do not perform treatment on the eyebrows and around the eyes. Patients must be aware that the face is a very hormonal area. Since hormones are what triggers hair growth, a treatment can require additional sessions.

Laser hair removal is effective just about anywhere you have unwanted hair. The face is furthermore an area that is always exposed to the elements and the sun. If you wish to undergo facial laser hair removal, you must avoid direct exposure to the sun during the 10 days prior to your session. Superficial tanning caused by sun exposure or tanning beds put the skin into an excited state, which can interfere with the treatment.

Should you have no choice but to be in the sun, make sure to apply a physical sunblock with a strong SPF that will protect your skin from sun damage both after and after your laser session. Remember to shave the areas before you come as long hair may increase the risks of burning and make the treatment less efficient.

Is Laser Hair Removal procedure better than waxing and shaving?

While there are other methods to temporarily reduce unwanted hair, including waxing and shaving, laser hair removal can offer permanent results with minimal discomfort.  How do you choose a hair removal method that works best for you and provides the best results? By comparing them all of course!

-Shaving: Shaving cuts the hair flat at the surface of the skin. Thus, when it grows back, it looks darker and thicker. Shaving also does not contribute to reducing hair growth. People who shave have to do it every other day since growth carries on immediately after each shave.

-Waxing: Waxing uses wax stripes that cover the hair. When you remove them, you pull the hair off the skin with their roots. Thus, the hair follicle will have to produce a new hair completely. In the very long term, waxing contributes to reducing hair growth. It is however painful, can cause ingrown hair outbreaks and is not sustainable.

-Chemical creams: Chemical creams dissolve the hair, which is then easily swiped away. The application of the cream and removal is fairly fast. However, such creams are packed with chemicals and harmful for the skin. Results are very short term and patients need to remove their hair at least once a week.

-Electrolysis: Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal method that uses electricity to destroy the hair follicle. However, the treatment targets each hair one by one. This explains why a treatment can be so long and require so many sessions. Electrolysis is therefore more pricey and painful than laser hair removal.

-Laser hair removal: A laser treatment will reduce hair growth by up to 95% over the course of one year. The treatment is not painful, just a bit uncomfortable. In the long-term, the cost is much lower than all other hair removal options.

Are there any side effects of laser hair removal?

Facial laser hair removal is a safe and efficient hair removal method that will help reduce hair growth by up to 95%. There are very few side effects and most of them can be easily avoided with good pre and post-session care.

Side effects include skin discoloration, scaring and burnings. However, those are mainly caused when the skin has been exposed to the sun before or after the session. Superficial tanning interferes with the treatment. Furthermore, the skin is more vulnerable to sun damage after a laser session.

If the laser intensity is too high, there is the risk that the laser burns your skin. However, you should always communicate with your laser technician so that they can adjust the intensity of the laser.
