1. What is acne?
Before we delve into what our acne facial entails and how it can really help your skin, let's give a brief reminder of what acne actually is. Curing a disease first requires to understand the condition. According to Mayo Clinic, acne is a "skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells." This will cause whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. Acne mostly occurs on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders. Although, acne is most common among teenagers, it also affects people of all ages.
Effective treatments are available, but acne can be persistent. It can be very frustration to see new pimples and bumps crop up where other just healed. Depending on its severity, acne can cause emotional distress and scar the skin. The earlier you start treatment, the lower your risk of such problems. Treatment will also depend on the type of acne you suffer from. There are indeed two types of acne: common acne and cystic acne.
Common acne is, as the name suggests, the most common form of acne. It is characterized by the presence of blackheads, whiteheads, and other types of pimples on the skin. The most common spots for breakouts are the face, chest, shoulders, and back. Although mild acne may improve with over-the-counter treatments, more severe forms should be treated by a dermatologist. Our acne facial helps with common acne, also know as acne vulgaris.
The other type of acne is cystic acne. Cystic acne is the most severe form and affects far fewer people. It develops when cysts form deep underneath your skin. This can result from a combination of bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells that get trapped in your pores. Cystic acne tends to occur in people with oily skin. It’s also more common in teens, women, and older adults with hormonal imbalances. Cystic acne can improve with age. However, the stubborn and painful bumps won’t go away on their own. Although our acne facial will not help with cystic acne, fractional CO2 laser will, which is also a service we offer.
2. Debunking acne myths
At Infinity Laser Spa, we love to debunk common myths about skincare and cosmetics procedure. We made a point of it as you can see with our other blog posts on why laser hair removal is neither painful nor expensive for example. Since we are mostly talking about acne here, it is time to debunk some very common yet damaging myths about the skin condition.
One very common misconception is that greasy food worsen acne. Eating greasy food has little to no effect on acne. However, working in a greasy area, such as a kitchen with fry vats, will impact your skin because the oil can stick to the skin and block the hair follicles. This further irritates the skin or promotes acne. However, your diet has no impact.
Chocolate will not cause acne nor encourage outbreaks on your skin. There is no evidence that it would so all chocolate lover can relax. They can still indulge. There is no evidence that cocoa beans cause pimples. And while some point to the sugar that also makes up a portion of all chocolate treats, even that evidence is weak. Eating an occasional chocolate bar, or two or three, will not cause acne. Cutting chocolate out of your diet won't clear up a case of acne, either.
Some may think that bad hygiene may be responsible for acne. This could not be further from the truth. Acne isn't caused by dirty skin. In fact, scrubbing the skin too hard or cleansing with harsh soaps or chemicals irritates the skin and can make acne worse. Acne is caused by hormones.
And finally, last but no least of those acne myths, is that cosmetics may worsen the skin condition. Again, this is not true. Cosmetics don't necessarily worsen acne, especially if you use oil-free makeup that doesn't clog pores (noncomedogenics) and remove makeup regularly. Non-oily cosmetics don't interfere with the effectiveness of acne drugs. It is true that consistently wearing a lot of makeup will make it difficult for the skin to breathe. Thus, remember to spend your weekends makeup free if possible.
3. Our acne deep cleansing facial
The deep acne cleansing facial starts with a gentle cleaning of the face. The esthetician will remove all dirt, makeup and oil from the skin. Then, will come the application of an antibacterial enzyme exfoliant to shed dead cells from your skin. This helps ensure that your skin is clean and ready for the next step in this acne facial. The esthetician will then proceed to pore cleansing by applying a pore opening mask. This step is accompanied by steam to ensure the pores open up and are ready for deep cleansing.
When the pores are ready, the facialist will proceed with the extraction. This part of the facial is not pleasant. You will feel a lot of pinching. However, it is when your skin is being cleaned of blackheads, blemishes and acne. Once the pores are clean, the facialist will apply a calming lotion and a serum. Those will reduce the redness and help heal your skin.
Finally, the facialist will apply a D’Arsonval on your face, a high-frequency treatment with antibacterial and calming properties; before applying a skin balance restorative face mask. Thus, completing the process.
All the products we use at Infinity Laser Spa are natural and organic. They are meant to prevent skin irritation and the clogging of pores. As part of the facial, patients also receive a relaxing face and neck massage, thus stimulating blood flow and collagen production. The last step in this facial to help with acne is the application of a special antibacterial and healing cream. This cream will make sure your skin heal properly and does not inflame.
